University of Miami quarterback Carson Beck was among those players selected to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
Before arriving in Coral Gables, Beck spent five seasons (2020-2024) at Georgia, where he delivered a standout career with Bulldogs. Beck led Georgia to a 24-3 record in 27 games as the program’s starting quarterback, throwing for 7,912 yards and 58 touchdowns in his time in Athens.
He was the starting quarterback for the final two seasons (2023-2024) at Georgia. In his first year as a starting quarterback in 2023, the Jacksonville native led the Bulldogs to a 13-1 record with 3,941 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 72.4 percent of passes (302 of 417).
The first Hurricane to be nominated for a major preseason award, Beck is looking to become the fourth Hurricane to win the Maxwell Award, joining Vinny Testaverde (1986), Gino Torretta (1992) and Ken Dorsey (2001).
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 11, 2025, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled November 25, 2025.
The winner of the 89th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 11, 2025. The formal presentations of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards on Friday March 13, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Last season, it wasn't until the midway point of the season before many started to catch wind of what Mario Cristobal was doing with the Miami Hurricanes. Now he has been added to the Preseason Dodd Trophy Watch List.
The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. today released the preseason watch list for the 2025 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank. This year's list includes 26 of the nation's top college football coaches representing all Power Four conferences, as well as the AAC, Mountain West, and an independent.
Managed by Peach Bowl, Inc. and presented by PNC Bank, The Dodd Trophy, college football's most coveted national coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership, and integrity– the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd's coaching philosophy. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, the award was established to honor the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division 1A) head football coach whose program represents the highest ideals on and off the field.
The watch list was created through a selection process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. taking into consideration each program's Academic Progress Rate (APR), Graduation Success Rate (GSR), commitment to service and charity in the community, as well as projected success for the 2025 season.
Coaches in the first year with their current teams were not included as they were ineligible to receive the Dodd Trophy until their second year with their program. Head coaches named to this year's watch list were also required to have an APR above the national average of 969.
The Miami Hurricanes' defensive star Rueben Bain Jr. has been named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List ahead of the 2025 college football season.
Last season was a struggle for the projected first-round defensive edge rusher. He battled through injuries for most of the season, and it showed. Now he is healthier than ever and taking care of his body as well.
“We've been working pretty hard at trying to lose weight, trying to cut body fat down, um, but eating pretty healthy," Bain said during spring practice. "Changing our body the right way in the off-season has been nice, a nice transformation.”
The 2023 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year finished his second season with 23 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. He missed five games thanks to a calf injury he picked up in the first game of the year against Florida.
Bain looks to return to his freshman-year form, where he took the nation by storm. In his two seasons at Miami, Bain has totaled 67 tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and three forced fumbles.
Named after former NFL Hall of Fame star Ronnie Lott, the Lott Trophy annually goes to the Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year, a player who has had the biggest impact on his team both on and off the field. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community, and Tenacity, all characteristics exhibited by Lott during his illustrious playing career.
