Miami significantly increases lead in Week 9 rankings

The Miami Hurricanes increased their lead as the No. 1 team in the Week 9 Associated Press Top 25 and AFCA Coaches Polls. Miami beat Pittsburgh 52-23 on Saturday, improving to 7-0. Ohio State moved up to second in the AP Top 25 after BYU lost 39-31 in double overtime at Central Florida.

Miami received 1,735 points and 59 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 and 1,839 points and 67 first-place votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll. Ohio State received 1,681 points and 10 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 and 1,767 points and six first-place votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll.

Sixth-ranked Utah in the AP Top 25 and No. 7 UCLA in the AFCA Coaches Poll were the only other teams receiving first-place votes in the Week 9 rankings. Miami received 1,697 points and 40 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 and 1,791 points and 50 first-place votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll last week.

Week 8 was the first time Miami was ranked No. 1 since the final poll of the 2002 regular season. Miami was the top-ranked team throughout the 2002 season, until a controversial loss to Ohio State in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.

Shuffle in the rankings

Losses by BYU and Texas Tech shuffled the rankings. Miami is the only team to remain in the same spot in the AP Top as in Week 8. Miami, Ohio State and Boise State are the only teams that remained in the same spot in the Week 9 AFCA Coaches Poll.

Wake Forest, 14th in the AP Top 25 and 15th in the AFCA Coaches Poll, is the only ranked team Miami has played this season. Miami plays at Notre Dame on Nov. 7. Notre Dame dropped one spot to fifth in the AP Top 25 and moved up two places to sixth in the AFCA Coaches Poll.
