In 2024, the offense was very bad, because of a multitude of reasons. The Oklahoma Sooners had a terrible scheme, terrible play caller, a quarterback who was seeing ghosts, injuries everywhere, and of course, a bad offensive line. All of that went wrong for Brent Venables in 2024.
No one thing was more of an issue than another, because they were all very bad, allowing the Sooners to have the worst offense in the country. Luckily, their elite defense quite literally saved them a time or two. The bad offensive line, though, was something that was impossible to not pay attention to.
There were so many different combinations used up front last season, mainly because of injuries, but also because of some players just not playing well. After getting John Mateer in the transfer portal, basically as a package deal with OC Ben Arbuckle, the Sooners don’t have to worry about the QB position anymore.
With Mateer as the quarterback, the Sooners have to have him protected. Sure, he’s uber talented, but to get the best out of the guy, you want him to not be running for his life.
The offensive line will have several position battle taking place during fall camp. While many believe that the five-star true freshman tackle Michael Fasusi won’t be the starter on Day 1, there will be opportunities for him to get on the field, as Ben Arbuckle has stated.
Fasusi is the future of the offensive line, and if he’s playing and protecting Mateer in year one, he’s got to learn everything, even if it mean doing it the hard way. On Friday during Day 2 of fall camp, he learned the hard way.
The Sooners started fall camp practice on Thursday, but Friday was the first one that was really open to the media. From there, the media that were on site got to get some videos of some drills and a bit of the scrimmages that took place.
One video that is currently making the rounds, is Fasusi going against edge rusher R Mason Thomas, who will likely be a first round pick in the next NFL Draft, because he is that good. And sometimes, that’s what you need to humble yourself.
And, it’s not that Fasusi needed humbling because he was cocky, or anything like that — sometimes a young player just needs a welcome to the league type of moment. Fasusi got his.

A good teaching moment for the true freshman going up against a future NFL pass rusher. pic.twitter.com/yreZm5IJHk
Fasusi tried to attack Thomas head on after the ball was snapped, and Thomas, who is a huge human, yes, is much smaller than Fasusi, threw the true freshman to the ground, making it look effortless.
But, this is not a bad thing at all, so don’t let it discourage you. Fasusi needs this — it’s only going to make him better, or better yet, elite, in the long run. Going against a top edge rusher every single day will make Fasusi great. Just wait.
