Michigan QB controversy continues, WR question marks, and an elite secondary highlight early camp overreactions for the Wolverines

It’s hard to fully predict what the Michigan Wolverines are going to be entering the 2025 college football season. Head coach Sherrone Moore enters his second year leading the program, and they had some understandable growing pains last season. They did, however, end the year on a strong note defeating Ohio State and Alabama.

As fall camp continues to rage on, we are already starting to hear some overreactions, both good and bad. Here are those main storylines that continue to circulate. That includes what to believe, and what might be slightly overembellished.

State of the Michigan QB room

The conversation is going to start and end with freshman Bryce Underwood, who is viewed as the future of the Wolverine program for obvious reasons. There is an effort to not want to push Underwood too early, and let him develop properly. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene begin the season as the starter. Underwood will most likely take over at some point, but the question is going to be just when.

WR question marks continue

There seems to be some buzz lately around Indiana wide receiver transfer Donovan McCulley, but he is coming off of a really disappointing 2024 season for the Hoosiers. After McCulley, the Wolverines are projected to start Frederick Moore and Semaj Morgan, with Anthony Simpson and true freshman Jamar Browder as the key reserves. None of those options had more than 27 receptions or 139 receiving yards this past season. Calling it an underwhelming group would be a massive understatement.

Elite secondary?

Due to injury and inconsistency, the 2024 Michigan secondary was a pretty big letdown. While they don’t have a star on the back end like Will Johnson, there’s a chance that group is much better in 2025. It starts with the return of Rod Moore from injury, who is expected to be one of the very best safeties in college football this season. Fellow safety Brandyn Hillman also showed some nice ability down the stretch. If Jyaire Hill is able to take a year two jump, and Arkansas transfer TJ Metcalf acclimates accordingly, this unit has a chance to be much better.

True freshman earning opportunities

Quarterback Bryce Underwood is the true freshman that everyone wants to talk about for Michigan, and for good reason. Underwood is going to have a chance to win the starting quarterback job against Mikey Keene this offseason with Jake Garcia coming in as insurance. Underwood, however, it’s the only freshman who is vying for a lot of playing time. Offensive tackle Andrew Babalola and wide receiver Jamar Browder are also fighting for opportunities, but are being projected as backups right now. I do believe that Babalola is going to be especially hard to keep off the field all season.
