Michigan State Defense Breakdown
Season Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season
- Jonathan Smith knows how to put together an offense, but it was a rocky first year in East Lansing. The attack sputtered, averaging fewer than 20 points per game and finishing 110th in the nation in total offense. But there’s a whole lot of talent returning, and there are plenty of good pieces from the transfer portal to play around with. But the season falls on …
- Aidan Chiles. It’s his third season - one at Oregon State and last year as the main man for the Spartans - but he’ll still be just 19 years old when the season starts.
The skills and talent are all there, but he needs to be a stronger decision-maker, cut down on the mistakes - that comes with age and experience - and make more big things happen. There’s a good backup in Alessio Milivojevic, but he needs live playing time.
- The staff got Chiles a few more weapons to go along with Nick Marsh, who led the team with 649 yards on 41 catches, and all-star talent Jack Veiling at tight end.
Chrishon McCray is a devastating speedster from Kent State. Omari Kelly (Middle Tennessee) is a big-play target on the inside. Even more speed is coming in with Rodney Bullard (Valdosta State), and more size enters the building with 6-3 Evan Boyd (Central Michigan).
- The top runners are gone, but Chiles can take off, and Elijah Tau-Tolliver should fit right in with close to 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns over the last two seasons at Sacramento State. Brandon Tullis and Makhi Frazier have talent, but they’re only missing experience.
- Stanton Ramil took over at left tackle late last season and should keep the gig, but the line is all about the new guys. Conner Moore (Montana State) was a special FCS tackle, and he’s got the versatility to work at guard if needed. Matt Gulbin (Wake Forest) should be solid right away at center, and Luka Vincic (Oregon State) joins the fun at guard.
