Michigan’s quarterback room is already generating buzz, and it’s not even close to kickoff. What started as a simple observation from a respected college football voice has quickly turned into a full-blown debate about the Wolverines’ future under center. The conversation revolves around incoming talents Bryce Underwood and Tommy Carr, two names that could define Michigan football for years to come.
The buzz started after Trevor Woods, a popular CFB analyst, pointed out that head coach Kyle Whittingham’s recent comments about Carr having the “it factor” were similar to Kim Harbaugh’s comments about J.J. McCarthy. The comparison was enough to start conversations in the football world. Woods suggested that Carr could be a useful hand behind Bryce Underwood to help him reach his best.
The way Kyle Whittingham talked about Tommy Carr having the 'it factor' reminded me of how Jim Harbaugh talked about J.J. McCarthy when he was a freshman.

Bryce Underwood is QB1, but don't be surprised if Carr pushes Underwood hard and Carr winds up starting some games at…
Together, the duo has the potential to do something great. While it is a bold claim, it feels true given that Carr came in with high expectations. He is expected to take control of the offense early on. However, another thing worth noting is that college football is highly unpredictable.
Despite Carr’s high potential, he does not receive the same level of national attention as many other athletes. Fortunately for Carr, this also means that he has significantly less pressure.
Carr is often questioned and criticized about whether he can handle the physical aspects of the game, given his build. The current college football landscape demands that a good athlete be both mobile and durable. However, this is something that he can work on before taking meaningful snaps as well.
One thing that is clear, though, is that this won’t be a one-man show. Underwood might enter as the favorite, but Carr’s presence will ensure good competition. In a program like Michigan, competition often brings out the best in players.
Moreover, it is worth noting that Michigan is not currently looking for a starter. Having two excellent quarterbacks can raise the team’s offense’s overall standards.
For now, it’s all speculation. But if Carr truly lives up to the “it factor” label, Underwood won’t have the luxury of settling in comfortably. This quarterback battle could end up being one of the most important storylines of Michigan’s season.
