Sporting News recently unveiled its rankings of projected Big 12 starting quarterbacks for the 2025 season, spotlighting Sam Leavitt at the top and laying out the depth across the conference.

The full list ranked 16 QBs, placing Arizona State’s leader at No. 1, followed by TCU’s Josh Hoover, Iowa State’s Rocco Becht, and BYU’s Jake Retzlaff. However, with Retzlaff now in the transfer portal, his status leaves uncertainty surrounding BYU’s position.

With Retzlaff removed, the adjusted top of the list reads:

Note that BYU’s slot is now a wildcard with Retzlaff not in the program. Their quarterback outlook remains unclear, though Retzlaff was initially placed at No. 4 behind Becht and ahead of Robertson.

Sporting News’s rankings highlight both the stability and volatility across the Big 12. Arizona State, TCU, and Iowa State present defined veteran leaders, while mid-tier teams like Utah and Kansas continue to develop their signal-callers. The Bears, Wildcats, and Red Raiders slot in above-average signal callers capable of a breakthrough, whereas UCF and Oklahoma State’s position battles hint at uncertainty or competition.

With the conference gearing up for big non-conference schedules, TV exposure, and playoff implications in 2025, how each QB performs under pressure will become razor-sharp. Sporting News’s list sets a baseline, but as always, these rankings exist alongside fall camp surprises, spring developments, and high-stakes game‑time performance.

If this list holds through media days and into September, the Big 12 season could hinge on veteran leadership and breakout youth. It offers fans a roadmap, but history warns that some of the biggest QB stories are still to be written.
