This past January, Nike and Deion Sanders began to transition away from the Diamond Turf 3 (or DT Max 96) and began releasing the Diamond Turf 1.
The model was the first Deion Sanders signature shoe and the one that paved the way for later success with the Diamond Turf 3 and a number of colorways and collabs over the years. The Diamond Turf 3 is the innovator model while the Diamond Turf 1 is the originator. The Black/White, currently only available as a cleat (official cleat name is the Diamond Turf 93 TD for searching purposes), is the first Diamond Turf 1 to release recently in a new and versatile colorway.
Each Diamond Turf model that has been released since Deion Sanders agreed to take over as the Colorado football coach have all included gold and team specific colors (ie CU, Falcons, OG). The OG colorways in both models released in the last two years all have gold. The CU inspired colorways obviously have gold.
The Falcons and Love Letter to Connie deviated from that but for specific reasons. The Black/White are the first pair of cleats or sneakers that takes a more “suitable for all” approach. The idea being the Black/White is just a clean colorway that works without a story or background behind it. It’s half black, half white and likely would coordinate with any fit or in this case uniform combinations.
As of 4 p.m. Eastern on May 29th, the Diamond Turf 93 Black/White cleat is still available in all sizes via Nike.com. There are several reasons that could cause this. The timing is interesting as most High Schools, Colleges, and even travel teams are not close to meaningful football, making the urgency to buy this cleat less dyer. There is also a very slight price increase over the OG DT1 cleats that came out earlier this year.
The Black/White model on Nike.com is actually placed within the OG DT1 cleat as a secondary colorway, as opposed to being its own item under that search. Then we have the abnormally large issue hidden in plain sight. Nike didn’t promote this release. Which is becoming increasingly typical. The typical process is to have Deion Sanders or Bucky Sanders tease the model on Well Off Media a month or two before they release and hope fans find it when it releases.
If the White/Black does good sales numbers, the colorway could be successful enough to ensure a wide sneaker release in the same colorway.
While cleat consumers and sneaker consumers are not the same breed necessarily, the cleat people are going to need to make some of these cleat sizes disappear if the sneaker people are going to get to see the Black/White in sneaker form.
