Ohio State's Ryan Day Reportedly Nearing Decision Amid QB Battle

One of the biggest storylines for the Ohio State Buckeyes going into the 2025 season is their quarterback battle between redshirt freshman Julian Sayin and junior Lincoln Kienholz.

Each option has real potential, with Sayin coming out of the 2024 recruiting class as a five-star prospect, the No. 2 quarterback and the No. 8 player in the nation, per Rivals Industry Rankings.

Kienholz, a member of the 2023 class, is a bit lower rated, but was still an impressive prospect, being labeled as a four-star recruit, the No. 15 quarterback and the No. 205 player in the nation.

However, with neither having any notable playing time at the collegiate level, Ohio State's fall practices will be the driving factor in the final decision of head coach Ryan Day and the rest of his staff.

A Winner May Soon be Announced

After a long offseason of Ohio State waiting and weighing its options, On3's Pete Nakos reports that a decision may soon be revealed.

"Ryan Day has mentioned this could come down to the wire," Nakos wrote. "The Buckeyes are scheduled to have another scrimmage this weekend, but a source said a formal quarterback announcement could come middle to late next week."

If the Buckeyes were to wait any longer than that, it would be cutting extremely close to their season opener against the Texas Longhorns, scheduled to be played at noon Aug. 30 in Ohio Stadium.

Sayin Sits in the Lead

Throughout the offseason, each quarterback has had plenty of time to prove why he is the man for the job, and in the same report, Nakos notes that Sayin has taken a small lead.

"Sources have given Julian Sayin the slight edge to this point in fall camp, but the separation between the former five-star recruit and Lincoln Kienholz is not wide enough to this point for Day to name a starting quarterback," Nakos wrote.

No matter who comes out on top, though, expectations should be tempered because either Sayin or Kienholz will be tasked with an extremely difficult matchup against Texas. Last year, the Longhorns ranked third in both points per game allowed (15.3) and total yards per game allowed (283.4).
