That’s not how Oklahoma State football works.

Oklahoma State is supposed to have a team that overachieves a bit, Mike Gundy pulls something out of his hair to win close games, and in the end, it’s a winning season with a bowl game and a ranking in the final top 25.

And last year, Gundy’s team was supposed to be deep in the conference championship mix in a new look Big 12 without Texas and Oklahoma.

Instead, it was the first time since Gundy’s first season in 2005 that Oklahoma State didn’t go to a bowl game.

After 18 straight winning seasons, the Cowboys had their worst campaign since 2000, and failed to win a conference game for the first time since 1994.

It wasn’t the worst season in Oklahoma State football history - that was the 0-10-1 run in 1991 - but it wasn't far off.

Injuries were an issue, talent level was a problem, and … it was a dud. The season was a big, awful dud, going 0-9 after winning the first three games, including an after-the-fact stunner over Arkansas.

No, Mike Gundy didn’t suddenly stop being a good football coach, and no, it’s not time to dismiss one of the best coaching jobs done over the past 20 seasons just because one year went so very, very wrong.

Want-to wasn’t an issue - Gundy’s guys gave it the old college try time and again - but it turned out not to be good enough. So make no mistake about it. 2025 will be one of Gundy’s toughest tests yet.

He and his staff had to figure out how to get stronger on the lines, and here come the wholesale changes.

The quarterback play has to be far better, the three from last year are gone, and in the mix are two redshirt freshmen to add more pop.

That’s putting two tons of pressure on the transfer portal. Over 30 new Cowboys have to come in, mesh with the parts in place, and produce.

It’s not going to be easy. Almost everyone will have Oklahoma State ranked near the bottom of the Big 12 - including us, probably - but bad things tend to happen to the rest of the conference when it's underrated.
