- The offense could never find steady footing. The passing game struggled, the ground attack was awful, and there was no controlling the tempo whatsoever. That should change quickly as long as there’s steadier play from …

- The quarterbacks weren’t good enough. Alan Bowman fought the good fight, but he threw too many picks. Two others were in the mix, but this year everything starts from scratch.

Zane Flores is a big, promising passer who can push the ball all over the field, and fellow redshirt freshman Hauss Hejny (TCU) adds more of a baller element to the mix.

- The top three receivers are gone, but there aren’t any worries - the Cowboys are loaded. Don’t get comfortable at all with any depth chart, with at least eight viable targets thanks to the transfer portal.

Christian Fitzpatrick was a force last year for Marshall, Jaylen Lloyd averaged 26 yards per catch for Nebraska, and Terrill Davis is coming off a 109-catch season with 1,609 yards and 15 touchdowns at Central Oklahoma.

They’ll go along with leading returning receiver Talyn Shettron, deep threat 6-3 Da’Wain Lofton, Ayo Shotomide-King, and terrific young tight end Josh Ford.

- The running game didn’t do enough last year, but the line was great in pass protection. Now everyone has to be replaced. It’ll be a battle throughout fall camp, starting with all the transfers.

Markell Samuel (App State), Tyler Brumfeld (JUCO), and Louie Canepa (New Mexico State) will work at tackles, Kasen Carpenter (Tulsa) at center, and Lavaka Taukeiaho (Weber State) at one guard spot.

- Ollie Gordon ran for 13 touchdowns, but he wasn’t able to recapture the magic of his 2013 season. Now he’s with the Miami Dolphins. The next three top rushers are back, with Trent Howland the best of the bunch - he ran for 230 yards, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. Rodney Fields and Sesi Vallahi will rotate in, each ran for 99 yards.
