The 2025 college football season is in its early stages, resulting in some teams flying under the radar while they continue to win.
One of the teams ranked in the top ten is the No. 6 Georgia Bulldogs. Since 2020, Georgia has established itself as one of the premier programs in college football. The Bulldogs secured two national championships in 2021 and 2022. Additionally, they won the SEC championship last year but were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.
This year, Georgia has started off strong, winning its first two games: a decisive 45-7 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd and a 28-6 win against the Austin Peay Governors. Despite these successes, ESPN's Paul Finebaum expressed his uncertainty about Georgia's performance during an appearance on "The Matt Barrie Show."
"Georgia's still a mystery," Finebaum said. "There's a lot of criticism of Mike Bobo, the OC. There are still some doubts about Gunner Stockton. This will define the Dogs, I think. We know the setting. We know the situation. If they don't look good and lose this game, the doubts are going to creep in. If they can be impressive, then Georgia may be back to its old tricks."
Gunner Stockton has assumed the role of quarterback for the Bulldogs following Carson Beck's decision to transfer to the Miami Hurricanes. So far, Stockton has thrown for 417 yards and two touchdowns, completing 69% of his passes. In addition, he has rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 5.7 yards per carry.
The true challenge for Stockton and the Georgia offense will come against Tennessee. The Volunteers started strong, defeating the Syracuse Orange 45-26 and East Tennessee State 72-17 in their first two games. Their defense has performed well, limiting Syracuse to 377 total yards and ETSU to just 216 yards. Both teams struggled to run the ball, combining for only 152 rushing yards.
While Tennessee started the season strong, Georgia has dominated. The Bulldogs have won eight straight meetings against the Volunteers, with the last defeat occurring in 2016 during Kirby Smart's first season.
The Bulldogs have won all eight of their recent games by double digits. This winning streak has led Georgia to a 29-23-2 all-time advantage over Tennessee. Georgia is favored to win by 4.5 points in the upcoming game. However, according to ESPN's Matchup Predictor, Tennessee has a 51.5% chance of winning.
Georgia has dominated this rivalry for nearly a decade, but with Tennessee’s rise and Neyland Stadium rocking, Saturday could feel different. The Vols and the Bulldogs will face off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC on Saturday.
