Paul Finebaum on Michigan: 'This is the most obnoxious fanbase in America'

The Michigan Wolverines cheated this season and over the past few seasons. That doesn't take away from the fact that they've still got a darn good football team (currently 10-0 and ranked No. 3), but even in its letter to the Big Ten arguing the three-game suspension of head coach Jim Harbaugh — Michigan did not and could not deny the cheating allegations.

The spy network run by former staffer Connor Stallions was against the rules. He and others were impermissibly recording the other team's sidelines in rival stadiums, for heaven's sake. We also know that there were Michigan coaches who knew about this, though at this time it's still unclear how far up the chain it all went.

There was certainly enough reason for the Big Ten to suspend Harbaugh — who is supposed to be in charge of this circus — but with the way Michigan as a whole has responded to the suspension has been entitled and self-revertant, to say the least.

The university has fought accountability tooth and nail, almost acting shocked that the Big Ten dare punish them for cheating. Fans? Well, don't even get on the message boards if you value your blood pressure. 

As a whole, Michigan has been acting like the aggrieved. The Wolverines are professional victims. 

You would have thought that interim head coach Sherrone Moore was crying about a recently deceased friend with the way he talked about Harbaugh after the win over Penn State. 

With all that backdrop, SEC analysis and college football talking head Paul Finebaum levied an accurate accusation against the Wolverines.

“This is the most obnoxious fanbase in America,” Finebaum said on ESPN (h/t On3). “This is a fanbase that literally think the world revolves around the University of Michigan football program. You can’t judge a university by those who tweet about it, but I’m going to.

“Michigan has what — one and a half national championships in about 70 years? Alabama and Georgia won one while we were talking here. And they look down at everyone … It’s a good state school, big deal! But, its football program is really becoming just comical in terms of what it’s trying to represent out there.”

Finebaum is right, it is comical. The Wolverines are both trying to build up a "Michigan vs. Everybody" narrative while in the same breath, Harbaugh shockingly and laughingly believes that Michigan is "America's Team".

It's just obnoxious, but perhaps Harbaugh does have a point.
