Penn State Football Offense Preview 2025: Are the Loaded Nittany Lions the Best In America?

The parts are all there to do something special.

It’s not that Penn State has been conservative, but with a defense that only gave up 16.5 points per game and was seventh in the nation overall, there wasn’t any real need to take many chances.

The offense led the Big Ten in rushing, the chances taken down the field were reserved for key times, and it all worked.

The firepower and experience are there to do more, though, as long as one key area steps up …

Penn State Defense Breakdown
Season Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season

- The Penn State receiving corps is undergoing an overhaul, but it might have upgraded. It lost top deep man Harrison Wallace III to Ole Miss, and No. 2 wideout Omari Evans (Troy) to Washington. Liam Clifford is the top returning non-running back receiver, but he only caught 18 passes.

The transfer portal is taking over, with Kyron Hudson (USC) coming in for the outside, Devonte Ross for the flanker, and Trebor Pena (Syracuse) for the inside. Pena was the big get after catching 84 passes with nine scores in the high-powered Orange attack.

Hudson is in his fifth year after catching 72 career passes with the Trojans, and Ross was fantastic last season with 76 grabs for over 1000 yards and 11 scores.

- You don’t get better by losing an all-time great tight end like Tyler Warren, who caught 104 passes for 1,233 yards and eight scores last season. Penn State has two good players in Khalil Dinkins and Luke Reynolds, and they can both catch - they combined for 23 grabs and three scores, even with Warren getting all the work.

- No matter who’s at receiver, the quarterback will make the passing game great. It only seems like Drew Allar outdueled Vinny Testaverde in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl, but he's going into his fourth season, and this is when he should take his game up a notch.

After throwing 25 touchdowns and two picks in 2023, he and the offense started to push it down the field a bit more last year. He averaged over eight yards per attempt, and now, with his experience and the talent around him, look out.

With Beau Pribula off to Missouri, the backup combination of Jaxon Smolik and Ethan Grinkemeyer is good, but inexperienced. There’s talent behind Allar, and both need real work.

- The line is loaded. Olaivavega Ioane is a 6-4, 330-pound All-Big Ten guard who’ll mash away on the left side along with fellow all-star Drew Shelton at tackle. Nick Dawkins is one of the Big Ten’s best centers, former Wisconsin transfer Nolan Rucci will be great at right tackle, and sophomore Cooper Cousins should be just fine at right tackle.

- If the running back room isn’t the best in America, it’s not far off. Nicholas Singleton can do a little of everything, running for over 2,900 yards and 32 touchdowns in his first three seasons, and catching 78 passes and eight scores. Kayton Allen led the team with 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns, and Quinton Martin Jr. is good enough to start just about anywhere else.
