Alabama’s 31-17 loss at Florida State came as a surprise to many. But when you look at recent statistics maybe it shouldn’t have been. And as much as the Seminoles deserved and earned the victory, it also happened because Alabama is no longer what they were when head coach Nick Saban was in charge of the program.

I mentioned this in an article yesterday regarding the beginning of the end for current head coach Kalen DeBoer. With the loss to the Seminoles, the Tide have gone 5-5 during their last 10 games. Alabama has lost five games since October 5, 2024. As a comparison, from January 1, 2020 until January 1, 2024, the Tide lost a total of six games. That is when everything changed, because on January 10th, Saban retired and DeBoer was hired two days later.

Another way to evaluate Alabama’s recent lack of success is by comparing them to the other SEC schools over the last 10 games. Here is how each school has done over that span:

  • 8-2

Georgia

  • 7-3

Florida

LSU

Missouri

Ole Miss

South Carolina

Tennessee

Texas

  • 6-4

Texas A&M

Vanderbilt

  • 5-5

Alabama

Arkansas

  • 4-6

Auburn

Kentucky

Oklahoma

  • 2-8

Mississippi State

Alabama has the same record as Arkansas and has only accumulated more wins than Auburn, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Mississippi State. It isn’t a coincidence that the coaches at each of these schools are sitting on the hotseat, which is also why DeBoer’s is getting warmer by the day.

It is difficult to sugarcoat the situation that Alabama is currently in. It is also difficult to foresee a way for them to dig themselves out when you look at the remainder of their schedule. Is it possible? Definitely, but how many Alabama fans also feel honestly confident about that happening?

It will be an interesting few months in Tuscaloosa.
