Quinn Ewers Gets Off to Sour Start to Pro Career with Woeful Preseason Debut

Ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, plenty of Miami Dolphins fans were clamoring for the team to use one of its treasure trove of picks on a signal-caller. At the time, Tua Tagovailoa was fresh off being limited to only 11 games in the 2024 season thanks to multiple injuries, and the Dolphins’ offensive attack cratered in the six contests without him on the field.

The Dolphins drafted Quinn Ewers in the seventh round of the draft, but Miami also let a highly promising prospect at the position slip from its fingers. Miami passed on selecting former University of Colorado star Shedeur Sanders multiple times. Ironically, the Cleveland Browns drafted Sanders with the No. 144 overall pick, and the Dolphins had the No. 143 overall pick.

The early returns on the Dolphins’ decision to select Ewers haven’t been all that promising. While it’s too early to definitively claim that Miami made the wrong move by drafting the former University of Texas standout, Ewers looked totally out of sorts in his preseason debut against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Simply put, there wasn’t anything positive to glean from his performance in a game that ended in a tie. For one, he was highly inaccurate with his passes, considering he completed just five of his 18 attempts. Furthermore, he was sacked twice and fumbled the ball twice.

Hopefully, Ewers will be able to put together a bounce-back performance when the Dolphins play their next preseason bout against the Detroit Lions on Aug. 16. If Ewers looks similarly woeful against the Lions.

In Miami’s preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he could theoretically be in danger of not making the team.

Whether Ewers can vindicate himself for his subpar preseason debut will be a noteworthy storyline to follow ahead of the start of the 2025 campaign. Miami will begin its season less than a month from now on Sept. 7.
