Could former Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers eventually become the next Brock Purdy in the NFL?
Purdy was the "Mr. Irrelevant" pick by the San Francisco 49ers, meaning he was the last player selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. After injuries to both quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart, Purdy was thrust into a starting role in Week 13 of the 2022 season. He hasn't looked back since. Purdy signed a massive 5-year, $265 million extension this year and is the 49ers quarterback of the future.
Ewers, who was originally expected to be a third or fourth round pick, was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The former Texas star will compete alongside Zach Wilson for the backup role in Miami behind starter Tua Tagovailoa. However, Tagovailoa has had issues staying healthy and Ewers could pass Wilson on the depth chart rather quickly.
If Ewers can stay healthy himself after dealing with a multitude of injuries at the college level, he has the chance to take a similar path as Purdy. He appears to be off to a good start as media tabbed Ewers the star of the show for the Dolphins third training camp practice on Friday.
On Saturday, the hype grew as one of Ewers' perfectly placed passes went viral on social media.

Ewers threw for 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns in three seasons as the starter for the Longhorns, becoming Texas’ all-time leader in yards and touchdown passes. Should Miami need Ewers to step in at any time, there will be high confidence surrounding the rookies potential.
