There is still plenty of time for contenders to make themselves known in the SEC after the action in Week 2.
"College GameDay" was in Norman for the epic showdown between No. 18 Oklahoma and No. 15 Michigan. The Sooners and transfer quarterback John Mateer pulled away from the Wolverines for a 24-13 win.
Head coach Brent Venables is in his fourth season with the program and is off to a 2-0 start. While the vibes are high around the program, not everyone is convinced on Oklahoma as an SEC contender.
On Monday's episode of the "College GameDay Podcast," Rece Davis did not see the Sooners as a true SEC title challenger due to their remaining schedule.
"I'm not quite there yet with Oklahoma being a threat to win the SEC largely for the same reasons," Davis said. "The schedule, because their schedule is pretty daunting, both the home and road. No matter how much they're already vastly improved."
Oklahoma still has two non-conference matchups left on its schedule, with Temple up next on Saturday and Kent State on October 4. The Sooners' SEC schedule contains only ranked teams from here on out.
Here is how Oklahoma's SEC schedule pans out:
Venables' best season at Oklahoma so far was in 2023, when he finished 10-3 after a 38-24 loss to No. 14 Arizona in the Alamo Bowl. The Sooners have not been in the College Football Playoff since 2017, when Baker Mayfield lost to No. 2 Georgia 54-48 in overtime.
Oklahoma kicks off against Temple Saturday at Noon ET on ESPN2.
