The Ohio State Buckeyes continued their dominance of college football with a 14-7 win over the Texas Longhorns at Ohio Stadium on Saturday, a strong performance from a team seen as the underdog by most fans heading into the game.
The Buckeyes' defense became the story of the day as it held Texas QB and Heisman Trophy favorite Arch Manning to 17-of-30 passing for 170 yards and a touchdown along with one interception.
The Buckeyes' win came on a day when West Virginia transfer CJ Donaldson led the way on the ground with 19 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown in a defense and field position game reminiscent of the Jim Tressel era in Columbus.
Afterward, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day pumped the brakes with choice words of caution.
Buckeyes QB Julian Sayin matched former Michigan QB Jim Harbaugh in the victory, becoming the first quarterback to defeat a number one ranked team since Jim Harbaugh's Wolverines beat the top-ranked Miami Hurricanes in 1984.
"I really liked his composure," Day said. "We probably could have opened it up later in the game but (with it being) his first start, we didn't want to do that," he added.
Ohio State used a conservative, controlled passing attack that resulted in Sayin's 13-for-20, 126 yard performance with one passing touchdown in a winning effort.
Day continue to speak after the game, pumping the brakes about fans and media getting too excited.
He paid respect to Arch Manning and Steve Sarkisian of the Longhorns while cautioning that OSU's season has just begun.
"It's a long season," Day said. "I'm just proud of these guys...Gutsy win to start," he added.
The Buckeyes were outgained 336 yards to 203 on the day but it didn't matter as their veterans and newcomers alike made enough plays to bring home the win.
Next up is a breather against Grambling State followed by a potential trap game against in-state foe Ohio University the following week.
Day, Sayin and the Buckeyes proved they're more than just a flash in the pan, knocking off the team many had pegged as a national title winner with a Heisman winning quarterback.
Sayin likely won't get the same type of hype Manning got prior to the season even after the big win, but he doesn't have to be a world beater for the Buckeyes to make a run at championships again this season.
