Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt isn’t just talking about a breakout sophomore season—he’s aiming for college football’s ultimate prizes.
“I have the national championship and the 2025 Heisman as my goals,” Leavitt told ESPN’s Matt Barrie. “But I don’t like to look at things from a big perspective all the time. Just day-to-day getting better.”
A stellar redshirt freshman campaign backs Leavitt’s confidence. After transferring from Michigan State, he led the Sun Devils to an 11–3 record, a Big 12 title, and their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.

Leavitt threw for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns, adding 443 rushing yards and five scores. His performance earned him Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year honors and a spot among early 2025 Heisman contenders.
Pro Football Focus graded Leavitt as the ninth-best quarterback in the nation, with an 89.1 overall score. He was the only Power Four signal-caller to earn 80.0-plus grades both as a passer and a runner, and his 1.1% turnover-worthy play rate ranked fourth among all quarterbacks.
Despite his rapid ascent, Leavitt remains grounded. He emphasizes daily improvement over long-term accolades. This mindset was evident during the first annual youth football camp he hosted with wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, where he stressed the importance of hard work and mental strength to young athletes.
Leavitt’s leadership and performance have not gone unnoticed.
Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham praised his quarterback, stating, “Sam’s really good and we should be really happy that we have Sam and we have him for two to three more years. I mean, Sam’s going to play on Sundays. There’s zero doubt in my mind Sam’s an NFL player.”
As the 2025 season approaches, Leavitt’s goals are clear: lead Arizona State to a national championship and contend for the Heisman Trophy. With his talent, work ethic, and leadership, he has positioned himself as a player to watch in the upcoming college football season.
