Shedeur Sanders is part of a packed Cleveland Browns quarterback competition this summer. Deion Sanders hasn't witnessed the training camp action in person.

During a conversation with Michael Irvin released Monday, Deion Sanders told his former Dallas Cowboys teammate that his son asked him to stay away from Cleveland's practices. His motivation didn't stem from embarrassment or fear of creating a distraction.

"Shedeur told me not to come. Let's get that out. He didn't want me to come," Deion said. "He was like, 'Dad, I may get three, four reps in practice. I don't want you seeing that. No, I'm not where I want to be. Let me get where I need to be.'"

Shedeur played for his famous father at Jackson State and Colorado before joining the NFL. Critics have questioned whether his dad's presence played a role in the former Buffaloes star falling to the fifth round of this year's NFL Draft.

The 23-year-old is fighting for quarterback reps alongside Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. As a result, Coach Prime may not see Shedeur play too much if he attends Cleveland's training camp.

It's probably not the scenario Deion envisioned for his son, perceived as a likely first-round selection for most of the draft cycle. However, the Hall of Famer believes Shedeur is handling the situation with grace.

"It's so funny because this is his first time ever, and he's dealing with it like a pro," Deion said. "He ain't mad. He ain't bitter. He's like, I got work to do, but I'm going to put in this work. One thing, they're going to have to let me play. Preseason is going to come. And when preseason comes, watch me work."

The family's other NFL rookie wasn't as bashful about keeping Deion Sanders away. Undrafted free agent Shilo Sanders encouraged his dad to attend a Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice as he fights for a roster spot.

"Shilo was the total opposite (of Shedeur)," Deion said. "'Come on down here!' He was happy."

Shedeur Sanders will look to work his way up Cleveland's depth chart before Deion Sanders watches him on the gridiron.
