Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines predicted to land former top-50 quarterback recruit, but why now?

It has been a bizarre football journey for former top-50 recruit Jake Garcia. Originally from California, the talented quarterback spent his senior season at Georgia power Grayson High School, but suffered from some eligibility issues. Garcia was rated as the No. 48 overall player and No. 8 quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite ranking.

The 6-3, 202-pound passer ended up with the Miami Hurricanes, where he spent just two seasons. Garcia would opt for the transfer portal, ending up with Missouri during the 2023 season but would never play. He resurfaced last season for the ECU Pirates, but would manage to throw for just 1,426 yards and 10 total touchdowns, while throwing 12 interceptions.

Following that dreadful season, Garcia was once again on the move. With just one year of eligibility remaining, it was uncertain what the market for him would look like. There was an expert prediction for Garcia to land with the Michigan Wolverines from On3 transfer portal reporter Pete Nakos on Friday.

It was reported previously that Garcia was visiting Ann Arbor this week, and clearly it appears taxing him to the class is the next step as it currently stands. There is going to be a natural question asked by many: Why would Garcia go to Michigan?

With five-star freshman Bryce Underwood on campus, as well as graduate transfer Mikey Keene, the plan behind center is firmly set for the Wolverines. As we have seen in the Transfer Portal era, veteran quarterbacks can cash in from bigger programs to come in as backups. That’s where this decision would be coming from for Garcia.

Talking to sources close to the Michigan program, it appears that the thought is for Keene to begin the season as the starter for the Wolverines. From there, Underwood is expected to takeover at some point as the starter. The bigger question is when.

If Garcia lands with Michigan, he will most likely serve as the third string quarterback. He is an emergency option who still possesses some talent, but isn’t there to really figure into the hierarchy of the position.
