By the end of the summer, a ruling is expected in the Michigan Wolverines football sign-stealing scandal — a topic that has remained in the spotlight for over a year.
The University of Michigan has already self-imposed a two-game suspension on head coach Sherrone Moore in an effort to get ahead of any penalties. The suspension is set to be served during the second and third games of the upcoming season.
The scandal continues to generate discussion across the college football world, even among coaches from other programs. One notable voice is TCU head coach Sonny Dykes, who offered a measured and thoughtful take on the situation.
“I think that’s the biggest thing, I mean, you know, you’re just now seeing the Michigan thing come down, and that’s really none of my business,” Dykes said. “I don’t know anything about that, but you know, that was a long time ago. And you know, the person that was responsible for that — or most of that — isn’t there anymore. And so do you punish the people that are there? Do you punish the young people that had nothing to do with it? I mean, that’s the problem that you run into. And so it’s a complicated thing. It’s not an easy fix. But you have to do something, you know what I mean?”
Dykes’ comments underscore a fair perspective: while those directly responsible may no longer be with the program, accountability still needs to be addressed. It’s a difficult situation for Michigan’s current staff, who are now left to deal with the consequences of a controversy they mostly weren’t part of.
Looking ahead, Michigan’s focus in the 2025 season will be on moving forward from last year’s disappointment. The Wolverines are now entering the Bryce Underwood era, and expectations will be high.
