Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar is off to a tremendous start through his first four games with the program.
Aguilar, who transferred from UCLA to Tennessee during the spring, didn't officially practice with the Vols until late July/early August.
But you'd never guess that by watching what the California native has done so far this season.
In four games this season, Aguilar has passed for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns (he also has a rushing touchdown). That includes a standout performance in the Vols' overtime loss to the Georgia Bulldogs -- 371 passing yards and five total touchdowns (four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown).
As a result of Aguilar's strong start with the Vols, he's starting to receive some attention as a Heisman Trophy candidate .
Sports illustrated revealed their updated Heisman Tropy rankings on Monday and they have Aguilar at No. 2 (Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer is at No. 1).
"Aguilar is the only player on this list with a loss at this point in the season, but that blemish came in the overtime thriller where Tennessee fell to Georgia 44-41 last week," wrote Sports Illustrated's Blake Silverman. "The Volunteers continue to put up a ton of offense with Aguilar under center, scoring 53.5 points over their first four [games]."
It's still very early in the season -- Heisman lists tend to go through a lot of changes through the course of a season -- but if Aguilar stays healthy and continues to perform like he has so far this season, he'll absolutely be in the mix to be a Heisman finalist in December.
