Stephen A. Smith says college football should be canceled today

As both the Big Ten and Pac-12 are reportedly considering the postponement or cancellations of football seasons and other fall sports due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, outspoken ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith no longer needs any time to ponder the subject.

While speaking on ESPN's "Get Up!" and "First Take" on Tuesday, Smith called for the immediate cancellations of fall campaigns.

“The college football season should be canceled. It should be canceled today," Smith said, per Troy L. Smith of Cleveland.com.

“Religiously I’ve been of the position you move full steam ahead," Smith explained. "You just exhaust safety protocols. That all goes out the window with college football because college football is inept. It’s incompetent. It’s devoid of leadership and damn near morals as far as I’m concerned. And they’re getting exactly what they deserve.”

Smith also hit out at Penn State Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin, who appeared on ESPN earlier in the day.

"He supports pushing the season back," Smith said of Franklin. "He supports not canceling the season. But does he have a definitive remedy to ultimately provoke a season taking place? The answer is 'no.'

"Who else has it? Nobody. And if you don't have it, then guess what? You ain't saying much."

The Mid-American Conference and Mountain West are the first two Football Bowl Subdivision conferences to officially postpone fall calendars. Both could look to schedule springtime formats for football.
