In this Tale of the Tape, I highlight two young stars at the QB position, set to compete against each other in week one. Virginia Tech is led by Kyron Drones, and South Carolina is led by LaNorris Sellers. The offense will go as far as these two go. They are the most critical piece to the puzzle for their respective teams. I expect a lot of explosive plays from both sides when the Hokies take on the Gamecocks on Aug. 31 in Atlanta.
2024 Stats: 1,562 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 6 rushing touchdowns
Strengths: Mobility, arm strength, improvisation
Drones is a quarterback who’s flown under the radar for far too long, but that’s about to change. His unique skill set adds a dynamic layer to the Hokies’ offense. With his mobility and arm strength, Drones gives Virginia Tech the flexibility to stretch the field vertically, whether it’s with designed QB runs or launching the deep ball. He’s the kind of playmaker that forces defenses to stay honest on every play. That added dimension to the offense is taking over the game.
2024 Stats: 2,534 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 7 rushing touchdowns
Strengths: Mobility, physical build, arm talent, poise under pressure
Sellers is ready for a breakout year in 2025. This young man is a force, especially in the run game, where he’s incredibly tough to bring down. But don’t mistake him for just a runner, he’s more than capable through the air, with the arm talent to make every throw on the field. His poise under pressure and physical tools make him one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the country. If he delivers as expected, don’t be surprised when he becomes the new face of the SEC.
Drones: Can he elevate his game by improving accuracy and timing to sustain drives against well-coached, disciplined defenses?
Sellers: Can he make smarter decisions under pressure, protecting the football by checking it down or throwing it away when necessary?
As week one rolls around, eyes will be on Drones and Sellers. These aren’t just quarterbacks, they’re catalysts for their programs. Their ability to execute, lead and energize their respective offense will determine the winner.
Whether it’s Drones’ physical grit and dual-threat prowess or Sellers’ raw explosiveness and confidence, the quarterback that answers the key question will give his team the upper hand. This is a proving ground for two young stars looking to stake their claim on the national stage.
