At times, the path of instant stardom is not that easy. That’s what George MacIntyre probably feels. The freshman quarterback arrived in Knoxville with plenty of hype, but the starting job looks out of reach this fall.
According to Pete Nakos of On3, MacIntyre, a true freshman, has been running with the Tennessee Volunteers' third-team offense during fall camp. The real battle is shaping up between senior Joey Aguilar and redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger. Aguilar brings 24 starts from the Appalachian State Mountaineers and a solid grasp of the offense. Merklinger already has a year in the program. That experience matters, and it’s showing.
Head coach Josh Heupel hasn’t named a starter yet, but his comments suggest MacIntyre has ground to make up. “All three of those guys have shown some really good characteristics,” Heupel said after the first scrimmage. “I don’t anticipate us dramatically changing the reps right now.”
Aguilar, Merklinger Lead the Pack
Aguilar’s college snaps and running ability give him a clear edge. Coaches value his mobility as the offense looks to replace eight starters from last year’s team. Merklinger offers familiarity with the system and steady progress in camp. Both are ahead of MacIntyre, who still needs to add weight and strength.
That doesn’t mean the 6-foot-6 freshman is fading away. Heupel praised his improvement since spring, noting his presence and command. “There’s some areas that he’s going to have to continue to grow in. But I really like what George has done so far,” Heupel said.
MacIntyre may have to wait his turn, but 2026 could be his year. Aguilar’s eligibility ends after this season, and Tennessee’s QB room could look very different by then. For now, the freshman is learning, waiting and keeping his name in the conversation.
