Every Texas player will enjoy a weekend off. That includes safety Andrew Mukuba.

One of the Longhorns’ top safeties could return in their next game on Nov. 9 against the Florida Gators.

Asked about Mukuba’s health, UT coach Steve Sarkisian said Wednesday, “He’s on the mend. I think he’s making good progress. Probably be a better answer next week as we as we kept get back into game week mode.”

Mukuba suffered a knee injury against Georgia while having one of his best games of the season.

The Longhorns left Mukuba in Austin last weekend along with injured receiver Isaiah Bond so they could both rest up and get healthy.

“Hey, I.B. is a special player when he’s healthy,” Sarkisian said. “And I think giving him that time was good for him. I know he pushed through as well as he could in the Georgia game. And I just felt like, if I could give him three weeks to get healthy for the Florida game, that would be a heck of a lot better than two. So we went with it, and it worked out in our favor.”

Without Mukuba, the Horns leaned on Jelani McDonald, who had one of his best games as a Longhorn last weekend. It was his first extended playing time, and Sarkisian said “just through experience alone I think his play is going to improve.”

Still, the Horns would love to welcome Mukuba back. The Clemson transfer has 25 tackles this season with two interceptions.
