The No. 9 Texas Longhorns (3-1) are now just five days away from facing Florida (1-3) in The Swamp. The Longhorns just had the privilege of a bye week, and head coach Steve Sarkisian says the team is in a good place.
Sarkisian addressed the media on Monday morning.
“I just got done commending the team and the staff at the end about the real sense of urgency you could feel in the building this morning and on the field today,” Sarkisian said. “The energy and the intent with which the guys went at it, and that’s everybody.”
The Longhorns last left off on a 55-0 win over Sam Houston State, a game in which fans got to see true execution and domination from start to finish on both sides of the ball for the first time this season.
Quarterback Arch Manning now gets his first chance to lead Texas into SEC play. Although he did see some action against the Gators and make a start against Mississippi State last year, this time it will truly be his team.
Playing in The Swamp against a good Florida defense will be rough, but he has what it takes to prevail, and so does the entire team. Even Sarkisian spoke on the challenge of playing at Florida, but he knows it has been struggling offensively.
“Obviously, a very difficult place to play that has been known around the country, is one of the more difficult places to play,” Sarkisian said. “They’ve been playing great defensive football all year, and they’ve got explosive playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. They’ve been off the mark just a little bit offensively, but it’s not for lack of players and it’s not for lack of scheme.”
The good thing for the Longhorns, though, is that they will finally have running back Tre Wisner available after he suffered a hamstring injury during the Ohio State game in Week 1 and hasn’t played since. Sarkisian provided an update on Monday.
“[He’s] progressing really well, and we’ve been pleased about his progress of where he’s at,” Sarkisian said.
Texas will face Florida on Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at 2:30 p.m. CT, and the game will air on ESPN.
