Texas Tech Axed This Game From its 2027 Football Schedule

Texas Tech football will not travel North Texas in 2027, first reported by Brett Vito of the Denton Record-Chronicle.

The Red Raiders reportedly bought itself out of a contract to play the Mean Green on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2027, at DATCU Stadium. TCU football announced shortly after that they’d be hosting North Texas in place of their Big 12 neighbor.

In a release, Texas Tech made the change “in order to maintain a minimum of six home games for 2027, Texas Tech will cancel its Sept. 11 trip to North Texas. Texas Tech is currently in the process of securing a replacement power conference opponent for the 2027 season as well as another non-conference game to replace North Texas.”

It’s interesting timing, too, following Oklahoma State‘s hiring of Eric Morris, the former head coach of the Mean Green, which, despite falling short of Tulane in the American Athletic Conference championship game, still posted 12 wins and defeated San Diego State 49-47 in the New Mexico Bowl.

The Mean Green soared into the national spotlight last season with Morris, and second-year quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who followed Morris north to Stillwater, Oklahoma, to become a Cowboy. Much of that team’s firepower are now in the Big 12 with Morris, but North Texas swiftly brought in former West Virginia head coach Neal Brown.

The scheduling drama doesn’t seem to end for Texas Tech, which notably fought a public war of words with Brett Yormark over contesting a Friday night home game with Houston coming up this season. Kirby Hocutt, the director of Red Raiders athletics, put out the following statement on this latest change to his football team’s schedule:

“We have actively been working on our 2027 football schedule for several weeks now and hope to have a new agreement with a power conference and FBS school finalized soon,” Hocutt said.
