Aside from it being a game between two P4 teams, Arizona State at Mississippi State wasn’t going to attract too much national attention on Saturday. That changed when Sun Devils’ head coach Kenny Dillingham recently made a few comments that quickly made him a villain in parts of Mississippi.

Bulldog fans were very quick to point out that there are numerous hotel options closer to Starkville that aren’t located in a casino. Also, the closest casino hotel to Starkville is approximately 45 minutes away. While it isn’t a major metropolitan area, there are plenty of options for opposing teams that are closer than “an hour and 15 minutes away from the stadium”.

When it comes to his comments regarding the local food, that woke up an entirely different type of beast within the Starkville locals. Demeaning Southern cuisine is worthy of the firing squad in some cases.

“Then you talk, some guys are finicky eaters so some guys at these hotels, they don’t like the food,” said Dillingham. “It’s not good, so now we get like sandwiches on the side. Texas Tech, who we played last year, our guys got sick the day of the game. We had about 10 guys whose stomachs, they were getting IVs because their stomachs were sick from the food. I’ve never even said that, but it’s just you’re learning and growing along the way. “So now, it’s like, ‘OK, we need the food we get.’ And then if a player who’s a finicky eater, we also need like a sub sandwich or a hamburger or something that they’re comfortable with because you’re gone. The pre-game meal, and then the night meal, if they don’t go that amount out of time for a good meal. So that’s something that I learned. When you’re going to like Seattle, the food is unbelievable. In some of the smaller towns, it’s harder to feed 160 guys so we are just trying to adapt.”

It will be a much more volatile atmosphere than was expected inside Davis Wade Stadium on Saturday night at 7:30 PM ET. Sometimes the less said the better, which Dillingham might realize when he walks into the stadium.
