Trent Dilfer has been the head coach of UAB's football program for the past two seasons. Let's just say he hasn't done much to uplift the program.
During his first year at UAB, Dilfer led the Blazers to a 4-8 record. That was an underwhelming mark, but fans had patience considering he was new to the job. With that said, the 2024 season was an utter disaster for the former NFL quarterback. For starters, UAB failed to improve its record. At 3-9, the Blazers somehow took a step backwards despite the fact that it didn't seem possible. Another issue is that sme of their games weren't even close.
UAB lost to Army on Sept. 28 by a final score of 41-18. The following week, Tulane defeated UAB, 71-20. In case that wasn't bad enough, UAB followed that performance up with a 34-point loss to Army.
Even though Dilfer has not done much to improve UAB's program, it appears the athletic department still trusts him. On Tuesday, UAB athletic director Mark Ingram announced that Dilfer will be back for the 2025 season.
"I have seen Coach Dilfer’s dedication and believe his football IQ, commitment to UAB, passion for the game, love for student athletes and relentless work ethic will pay off in the near future," Ingram said. "I support Coach Dilfer and the team, and I will do everything I can to help them compete for bowl eligibility and championships in The American and beyond."
Most fans believe this is a foolish decision on UAB's part. It's hard to blame them considering the Blazers have a 7-17 record under the Super Bowl champion's leadership.
On the bright side for UAB fans, Dilfer's leash next season probably won't be very long. Either he'll actually get the program back on the right track or he'll find himself looking for another job.
