North Carolina has reportedly made a decision on Bill Belichick's status for the 2026 season.

Belichick's first year as the head coach of North Carolina ended with a 42-19 loss on the road to NC State. Overall, the Tar Heels went 4-8 under the legendary coach's command. Outside of wins over Stanford and Syracuse, North Carolina really struggled during conference play.

A little over two weeks ago, Belichick was mentioned as a coaching candidate for the New York Giants. However, he shot down those rumors in a hurry.

"I  have great respect and genuinely care for the New York Giants organization and both the Mara and Tisch families. The New York Giants played an important role in my life and in my coaching journey. It was a privilege for me to work for the Mara family and be a member of Coach Parcells' staff for over a decade," Belichick said. "However, despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies."

Will Belichick stay in Chapel Hill?

According to Greg Barnes of Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels are committed to Belichick "for at least another year."

Barnes noted that North Carolina would need to pay Belichick $30 million in order to get rid of him right now. We can't blame the athletic department for seeing this experiment through for at least one more season.

If Belichick doesn't show drastic improvement in Year 2, North Carolina may feel the need to make a coaching change next offseason. For now, he's safe.
