Last season, for the first time since 1984, the Alabama Crimson Tide lost to the Vanderbilt Commodores, snapping a 23-game winning streak. The class of the SEC, Alabama, had won seven national titles during that span, while Vanderbilt had just three winning seasons, signifying the magnitude of the Vanderbilt victory.
The defeat not only represented a brutal setback in the first year of the Kalen DeBoer era but became the eventual nail in the coffin for any College Football Playoff aspirations.
Naturally, the stunning disappointment has not sat well with many of Alabama's holdovers, including freshman sensation and wide receiver Ryan Williams.
During a recent conversation with former NFL Super Bowl-winning bench boss John Gruden, Williams did not describe their upcoming matchup against Vanderbilt this season as a revenge game but rather an event where they are "going to kill an ant with a sledgehammer."
Williams did specify that Vandy played a sharper game and they will have "red eyes" for their conference foe in 2025 but expects a one-sided affair this fall.
In the loss, Williams had three catches for 82 yards and a score, but it was the Commodores' Diego Pavia who had a career performance, going 16-of-20 for 252 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran 20 times for 56 yards. After winning a legal case against the NCAA, Pavia will return to Vandy next season. The dual-threat passer became aware of Williams' remarks on Tuesday.
Pavia took to Instagram, posting the lyrics "They actin like they tough but don't want no confrontation" from the song "Made It (Outro)" by Gucci Mane. He also added a 100 and a smoke emoji, strongly indicating he is unfazed by this year's rematch in a hostile Bryant-Denny Stadium. He also tagged Williams' Instagram handle, saying, "Run It."
Pavia is no stranger to beating top programs, beating Auburn on the road during his final season with the New Mexico State Aggies in 2024.
