With the opening of the transfer portal right around the corner, Virginia football got some great news on Thursday evening as senior defensive tackle Jahmeer Carter announced that he will be returning to UVA for his final year of eligibility in the 2024 season.
"After thoughtful consideration, I've made the decision to return to the University of Virginia to play out my last year of eligibility," Carter said in a post on social media. "I am grateful for the opportunities and look forward to the future! Go Hoos."
A 6'2", 312-pound defensive tackle from Baltimore, Carter has appeared in 43 career games over the last four seasons, including 32 starts. Carter started every game on UVA's defensive line in each of the last two seasons and totaled career-highs across the board this year with 35 total tackles, 13 of them solo stops, two tackles for loss, and a sack. He delivered his best game in Virginia's upset win at North Carolina, posting five tackles and a sack in the historic victory in Chapel Hill. For his career, Carter has amassed 101 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks.
Prior to this season, he was one of five UVA players listed on the 2024 Senior Bowl Watch List and it seemed to be a likely outcome that Carter's days as a Cavalier were coming to an end at the conclusion of this season. Instead, Virginia will get back a mainstay, veteran leader, and disruptive force on the interior of its defensive line for the 2024 season.
