Quarterback J.J. McCarthy's escape act against the Hoosiers pass rush late in the second quarter ended with the Wolverines quarterback flipping the football backhanded to running back Donovan Edwards for a 16-yard gain.
The play sums up the type of season McCarthy is having. Entering Week 7, he leads quarterbacks in ESPN's QBR (93.7).
He is 97-of-125 (77.6 percent) for 1,290 yards, 14 total touchdowns and three interceptions. Associated Press No. 2 Michigan (6-0) built a 35-7 lead in the third quarter, with McCarthy beginning the game 14-of-17 for 222 yards and three touchdowns, including a 54-yard score to Colston Loveland.

Per Oddschecker, McCarthy (+1500) is fifth in Heisman odds, trailing a trio of Pac-12 quarterbacks — Michael Penix Jr. (+225), Caleb Williams (+300) and Bo Nix (+750) — as well as Oklahoma quarterback Dillion Gabriel (+1400).
The Wolverines have yet to play a high-profile game and won't until they travel to No. 6 Penn State (5-0) on Nov. 11. The way McCarthy has played this season, he would seem to be a safe bet to have multiple Heisman moments later this year.
We got a teaser on Saturday.
