With the fall season still a few months out, SEC Network’s Cole Cubelic is running through a top 5 series of positional rankings within the conference on his show the Cube Show.

In his latest rankings, Cubelic tasked himself with selected his top defensive lines in the league which was no small feat.

But did Alabama land in his top 5? Sort of.

Cubelic acknowledged that he did cheat the rankings a bit adding six teams to the analysis which included Alabama ranked at 5B and Tennessee at 5A. His reasoning behind putting the Crimson Tide in the lower five slot, was that it hasn’t lived up to it’s lofty standards for some time.

“I think Alabama has some quality players back and part of this thing is going to be the same thing we talked about with Georgia and a couple of other groups,” Cubelic said. “The standard is just not what it’s been either the last few years or the last eight to ten years. It just isn’t.”

Ten years could be a little bit of a stretch but it has been some time since Alabama has had a defensive lineman drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft, as Quinnen Williams was it’s last one which came in 2019.

There was still a lot that Cubelic liked about the group including Jah-Marien Latham, Tim Keenan and LT Overton but for the most part it doesn’t strike him as a dominant group this year.

“I think it can be a good group,” Cubelic said. “I think it could be a group that goes a lot of way helping you win football games. Is it going to be a consistently dominant group? I don’t know if I’m ready to put them in that category just yet.
