Crimson Tide Make Major Quarterback Decision Ahead of 2026 Season

Sophomore Keelon Russell has been named the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback after beating out senior Austin Mack in one of Alabama’s most closely watched position battles of fall camp, sources told ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Saturday.

Russell now faces the challenge of replacing Ty Simpson, who developed into a first-round NFL draft pick before being selected No. 13 overall by the Los Angeles Rams.

The 6-foot-3, 207-pound Russell arrived in Tuscaloosa as one of college football’s most highly regarded prospects. ESPN ranked him as the No. 2 overall recruit in the 2025 class after a decorated career at Duncanville High School in Texas.

Russell won two state championships at Duncanville and finished his high school career by earning Gatorade National Player of the Year and Elite 11 Finals MVP honors.

His first season at Alabama offered only a limited glimpse of his potential. Russell appeared in two games as a freshman, but his performance during Alabama’s A-Day spring game in April provided an early preview of what he could bring to the offense.

Russell passed for 240 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in the spring game, strengthening his case to become Alabama’s next starter.

The competition continued throughout the offseason, with Mack providing the Crimson Tide with a significantly more experienced option.

Mack began his college career at Washington in 2023 and followed coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama. Now in his fourth season playing under DeBoer, Mack served as Simpson’s primary backup last year and played 62 snaps.

His most significant action came in Alabama’s season-ending 38-3 loss to Indiana in the Rose Bowl during the College Football Playoff quarterfinals. Mack played 22 snaps after Simpson suffered an injury.

Ultimately, Alabama elected to turn the offense over to Russell and his considerable upside.

He will inherit a program coming off an 11-4 season that ended with Alabama ranked No. 9 in the final AP poll. The Crimson Tide reached the College Football Playoff but fell short of the national championship standard that has defined the program.

Russell also takes control of an offense undergoing significant personnel changes.

Alabama is replacing six players selected in the NFL draft, including Simpson, meaning Russell’s transition into the starting lineup will happen while several other players adjust to expanded roles.

Alabama Expectations

Alabama enters the season ranked No. 13 in the preseason poll, and Russell’s development could play a major role in determining whether the Crimson Tide can return to the College Football Playoff and contend for an SEC championship. For DeBoer, naming Russell the starter gives Alabama time to build continuity before the season begins.

For Russell, the opportunity comes quickly.

After arriving as one of the nation’s premier recruits, he will go from playing only two games as a freshman to commanding one of college football’s most scrutinized offenses. Russell’s first test as Alabama’s QB1 arrives Sept. 5, when the Crimson Tide open the season against East Carolina at noon ET on ABC.
