The Wisconsin Badgers have improved to 4-7 on the season after defeating a second ranked opponent this year in the visiting Illinois Fighting Illini.
Wisconsin entered the game with plenty of focus on the festivities surrounding the game and the senior students on the roster. However, the Badgers also understood just how potentially winnable the contest was given some of the performances Illinois has had this season. The Badgers were able to secure the 27-10 win in emotional fashion as football in Madison could be slowly returning to something every fan can enjoy.
Wisconsin is in the win column once again and the biggest props after the game must go to the defense after another stellar performance was put together. The Badgers have historically struggled with rushing quarterbacks in the past but Luke Altmyer was rendered virtually immobile against Wisconsin. The quarterback had just 20 yards on the ground while being sacked five times.
Defensive back D’Yoni Hill led the Badgers’ defense in coverage as Illinois was unable to string together anything significant through the air. Hill has recorded five or more tackles for Wisconsin through his last four games now as the defensive back has made impressive strides as the season comes to a close.
Linebacker Darryl Peterson led the defense against Illinois with a dominant three sack performance that stunted the opposing offense. Peterson had just 3.5 sacks on the season heading into the game, and now has a new career-high after previously recording 4.5 sacks in 2023.
Fellow linebacker Mason Reiger recorded a sack against Illinois, adding to an already successful season. The linebacker was unable to play last season due to an injury but returned to play this year with a renewed passion for the sport. Reiger has recorded a solo or assisted sack in the last four games for Wisconsin as the defense continues to rely upon the linebacker.
For the Badgers offense, scoring and moving the football in general has not been an easy task this season for the most part. Wisconsin scored 20 points in four games but have begun to turn things around with more positive performances.
Running back Darrion Dupree was the life of the offense for Wisconsin as true freshman quarterback Carter Smith is still not fully prepared to run a pass-heavy playbook. Dupree has just 181 rushing yards this season entering the game against Illinois. The running back recorded the biggest play of the night, however, with an 84-yard touchdown that broke the game open for Wisconsin.
Smith was unable to surpass his career-high of 98 passing yards against Illinois but the quarterback had his most accurate game to date. Smith completed nine of his 11 pass attempts while serving as the primary rusher for Wisconsin was a grand total of 17 carries.
Next up for the Badgers will be a season-ending contest against the Minnesota Golden Gophers away from home. Minnesota is 6-5 and 2025 has been a tale of two seasons at times with a win over a ranked Nebraska team and losses to California and Northwestern. Wisconsin cannot make a bowl game this season which means nothing should be left on the table against the Golden Gophers.
