Wisconsin Football Transfer Takes Parting Shot at the Coaching Staff
Tork Mason / USA TODAY NETWORK

After three seasons with the Wisconsin Badgers, safety Kamo’i Latu entered the transfer portal in search of a fresh start, but not before taking what appeared to be a parting shot at the current coaching staff.

Latu, who transferred to Wisconsin from Utah ahead of the 2022 season, took to social media to thank former Badgers head coach Paul Chryst and defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard

“Huge shoutout to Paul Chryst and Jim Leonard [sic] staff for an amazing time at Wisconsin! Wisconsin will always have a special place in my heart! Mo’iBoy out,” Latu wrote.

Latu later clarified his comments on social media, describing his remarks after most fans took them as parting shots at the current Wisconsin staff.

“Ain’t a shot, just giving credit where credit is due! Y’all wouldn’t be prepared if I was to start firing shots, but god taught me differently. Mahalo and aloha ,” Latu wrote. While he denied any ill intent, the tone of his statement left little doubt that he felt a stronger connection to Chryst and Leonhard’s administration during his time in Madison.

The post notably did not mention current Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell or his staff, who have led the program for the last two seasons.

Latu’s best season with the Badgers came during the 2022 campaign when he stepped into a meaningful role amidst a turbulent year for the program. He finished with 55 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, and three pass deflections, showing flashes of the hard-hitting potential he was recruited for out of high school.

However, injuries limited Latu to just three games and 11 total snaps in 2024, capping a five-year college career in which the Honolulu native totaled 98 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions, and 10 pass deflections. His struggles with a 20.3% missed tackle rate also contributed to his reduced role with the Badgers.

Latu has since committed to UConn, where he’ll use his final year of eligibility.
