Now that the calendar has flipped to January and the WVU football staff is coming together, it’s time for West Virginia to start hosting transfer players they are hoping to add to the roster. On Thursday, WV Sports Now learned through our partners at the Portal Report that the Mountaineers will host Northern Illinois transfer wide receiver Cam Thompson next week.

Thompson will be on campus on Jan. 7-8 after spending time at Mississippi State and before heading to Iowa. The 6-foot, 198-pound receiver was a late entrant to the transfer portal, officially entering on Dec. 28 before the current window closed for most players.

Thompson, a Boardman, Ohio native, has spent the last two seasons at NIU after starting his college career at Eastern Illinois. In 2024, he caught 28 balls for 391 yards and scored three touchdowns in 11 games played.

He also has experience as a returner, making him more attractive than if he was just a receiver as a player looking to advance levels to the Power Four. Thompson returned nine kicks and a punt, including one kickoff for a touchdown. He averaged 28.9 yards per kickoff return.
