Indian all-rounder Axar Patel has been named the new captain of Delhi Capitals following the departure of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. Pant, who led the franchise in previous seasons, will now captain Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after being acquired for a record ₹27 crore (£2.54 million) at last year’s auction.
With Pant’s exit, Axar becomes the longest-serving Delhi Capitals player. The all-rounder has amassed 967 runs and claimed 62 wickets at an economy rate of 7.09 in 82 appearances for the franchise. He also serves as vice-captain of India’s T20 squad and has represented the national team in 14 Tests, 68 one-day internationals, and 71 T20Is.
The 31-year-old was instrumental in India’s Champions Trophy triumph, excelling at No. 5 with the bat while also delivering with the ball, taking five wickets at an economy rate of 4.35.
Following the announcement, Axar expressed his gratitude for the leadership role.
“It is my absolute honor to captain Delhi Capitals, and I’m deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me,” he said.
“I’ve grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward,” he added.
With Axar’s appointment, all 10 IPL franchises have now confirmed their captains for the 2025 season. While some teams have retained their leaders, others have opted for fresh faces in hopes of a shift in fortunes.
Nine of the 10 captains in IPL 2025 will be Indian, with Pat Cummins as the only overseas skipper, continuing his role with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals), Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), and Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians) are among those retaining their leadership roles.
The 2025 IPL season is set to begin on March 22, with the final scheduled for May 25. A total of 74 matches will be played across 13 venues.
