The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released an official update on captain Shubman Gill’s injury on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The star batter left the field after facing just three deliveries in India’s first innings on Saturday, November 15.
Gill came in to bat at No. 4 following Washington Sundar’s dismissal by Simon Harmer in the 35th over. He got off the mark immediately with a stylish sweep for a boundary, but unfortunately injured his neck during the shot and appeared visibly uncomfortable.
After a brief consultation with the team physiotherapists, Gill walked off the field, forcing Rishabh Pant to unexpectedly come in to continue the innings as the skipper’s time at the crease ended prematurely. BCCI issued an official statement in the early part of the second session, with Gill still undergoing assessment off the field.
“Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress,” BCCI’s statement read.
Shubman Gill has previously struggled with neck problems, including stiffness and spasms. Last year, he missed two matches, the second T20I against Sri Lanka and the first Test against New Zealand, due to a similar injury.
India were 79-2 when Shubman Gill left the field for treatment in the first session. Since then, the batting lineup has struggled against the South African attack. Rishabh Pant played a brief but entertaining innings before being dismissed just before lunch, leaving the score at 132-4.
The troubles continued into the second session as Simon Harmer quickly removed Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja in successive deliveries. At the time of reporting, India are 172-6 after 55 overs, holding a slender lead of 13 runs.
With Gill still not cleared to bat, Kuldeep Yadav has joined Axar Patel at the crease. Only two recognized tail-enders, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, remain in the Men in Blue’s lineup.
