Ben Stokes has never been one to do things halfway. Now back from injury and ready to lead England against Zimbabwe, the Test skipper has made one thing clear: his team is aiming for the No. 1 spot in world rankings. “We’ve got one more place to go,” he messaged his coach and director after England rose to second place in the ICC table. Only Australia stands in their way.

Taking over from Joe Root in 2022, Stokes inherited a struggling side. Since then, they’ve won 22 out of 35 matches, climbing steadily. With a packed summer ahead—India at home followed by the Ashes in Australia—Stokes believes dominance, not ruthlessness, is key. “Whatever situation we find ourselves in, I want us to dominate,” he said.

The Zimbabwe Test marks Stokes’s return to action after six months out due to a hamstring injury. He’s trained hard, but he knows training can’t fully prepare a player for the intensity of a real match. “There’s always a gap between how far you can push yourself in training and what happens in a game,” he said.

Despite the layoff, the 33-year-old believes he’s in his best physical shape ever. “I’ve worked on every part of my game and fitness,” he shared. “This time I’ve made sure my recovery is complete. I feel strong and confident.”

Still, he’s easing into the bowling load. “I’ve done what’s needed to bowl some overs, but I’ll build up slowly,” he explained. Stokes is well aware of the physical demands his role places on him. “It’s a tough job, so I wanted to come back without any doubts,” he added.

The bigger challenges lie ahead. The five-Test India series and the Ashes will demand his all-round best. But Stokes is not just thinking about fitness or wins. He’s thinking legacy. “I want to dominate every situation—bat or ball. I’ve done it before. I know I can do it again.”

With a squad full of belief and a leader who thrives on challenge, England’s push for the top spot is more than just talk. It’s a mission—and Stokes is charging ahead.
