Former India cricketer Kiran More has addressed the criticism surrounding the India-Pakistan match in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, backing the government’s decision to engage in international tournaments with the Men in Green. The match has been heavily criticised following the recent rise in border tensions between the two nations, particularly after the Pahalgam terrorist attack.

A large number of fans decided to boycott the group-stage match. However, More defended the government’s stance on competing with Pakistan in multi-national tournaments, while stressing that bilateral series should not take place in the current climate.

“Several critics have raised concerns about the India vs Pakistan matches. If it were a bilateral series, there might have been an issue, but since this is the Asia Cup, these matches are a part of the competition. Hence, the government’s decision is justified,” More told ANI.

The group-stage clash became contentious after Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav didn’t shake hands with his Pakistan counterpart, Salman Agha. After the win, the Indian team also skipped the handshake ritual.

This incident sparked anger and Pakistan boycotted the post-match presentation ceremony. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged a formal complaint against match referee Andy Pycroft for not taking any action against the Indian players. The PCB even threatened to withdraw from the tournament unless their concerns were addressed, causing a delay in the start of their third group match against the UAE.

After a discussion with Pycroft, the PCB decided to stay in the competition. The upcoming Super 4 match between India and Pakistan on September 21 is expected to attract attention.
