The Nepal national cricket team have looked promising in T20 cricket in the past few years and have successfully qualified for multiple T20 World Cups. However the side has failed to deliver in the ODI format and with their performance in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 cycle, their chances of qualification to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 are severely threatened.
League 2 is a crucial series for the low-ranked ODI teams as it provides direct qualification to the World Cup and there are 36 games played by every side during the cycle. Nepal have already played 24 games and have managed to win only 8, losing 14 games to their difficult run in League 2. Nepal is currently placed near the bottom of the points table with only 12 games to go.
Nepal is currently placed 8th in the League 2 standings. To remain in contention, the team requires a drastic overhaul and needs to perform extremely well in the remaining 12 games. Nepal is playing a tri-series at home against USA and Scotland and must win all four games in the tournament.
The top four teams in League 2 qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier event. This tournament is a final stepping stone to the ODI World Cup at South Africa and will include 10 teams comprised of the top League 2 teams, lower-ranked Full Member nations, and teams which qualify from play-offs.
Only the top two teams from the Qualifier will proceed to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 with direct qualification.
Currently, there is a substantial difference between Nepal's point standings and that of the 4th-placed Netherlands. With many wins required for the nation to break into the top 4 of League 2, they must win most of their remaining 12 matches.
Even if Nepal don't manage a top 4 finish in League 2 it is still possible for them to qualify for the main event but the path is considerably tougher.
The bottom 4 teams of League 2 go into the Qualifier Playoff tournament and battle with the best sides of the Challenger League competition. This 6 team event will feature two teams that go to the World Cup Qualifier tournament and then in this World Cup Qualifier tournament it is a 10 team event and they have to be in the top 2 to qualify for the ODI World Cup.
This means they could have two qualifier events to battle through. The job does not look like one of the easier ones, but Nepal have talented players and matches left to make this possible at least.
