In cricket tournaments, Net Run Rate (NRR) plays a significant role. When teams are at an equal point, NRR is considered to advance one to the next stage. Although, many people find it confusing, NRR is relatively simple when one goes through the steps involved in it.
The fundamental principle behind NRR calculation is very simple.
The formula for NRR = (Team's Run Rate) - (Opponent's Run Rate).
Run rate indicates total runs scored over total overs played.
It must be known that only matches which produce results are considered while calculating NRR. In case a match is declared without a result then that match should be omitted while calculation.
In case DUCKWORTH/LEWIS rule is invoked and match has been concluded, then the calculation rules differ slightly.
However, a very important point to know is when the team playing, gets all out prior to using its scheduled quota of overs, the run rate is always considered for the full number of overs allocated to that innings.
Let's take a look at the numbers of India in T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 after their 1st match against South Africa.
So far in the Super 8 of T20 World Cup 2026, India has played one match. Following are the numbers after the match against South Africa.
South Africa scored 187 runs in their 20 overs, which means their run rate will be 187/20 = 9.35
India, on the other hand, were bowled out for 111 runs in 18 overs against South Africa. Now, as they lost all their wickets, the number of overs for them will be counter as 20, even though they played 18 overs.
Run Rate of India: 111/20 = 5.55
Now, to calculate India's net run rate, we'll have to subtract oppositions RR from India's RR.
India's NRR: 5.55 - 9.35 = - 3.800
Matches can be affected by rain and the rules for calculating NRR also get affected with rain. Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method is used when a match gets affected by rain. Some important rules in DLS which need to be remember are:
The match was originally a 20 overs per side match. It was affected by rain and reduced to 15 overs per side match.
NRR calculation for the above match
NRR is calculated considering the 15 overs and the target given to team B. It is not based on 20 overs at any stage and super over does not count at any point.
Difference is 10.00 - 9.67 = 0.33
In short, NRR shows how fast is scoring in contrast with the speed the opponent scores against the side and the greater is the positive value; higher will be the team's position in the points table.
