The Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai has suffered heartbreaking news after his mother passed away today, April 27. Azmat's national teammates Mohammed Nabi and Karim Janat confirmed the news with a post on their X account. Nabi wrote,

“I am deeply saddened to hear that the respected mother of Nawab Khan Umarzai and our national team player @AzmatOmarzay has passed away."

Will the Punjab Kings temporarily release Azmatullah Omarzai?

Since the last year, Azmatullah Omarzai has been a part of the Punjab Kings. In 2025, he played a crucial role in taking Punjab to their final after 11 years. However, he is yet to make an appearance in 2026. Punjab has played 7 matches so far, with one getting washed out. But Azmat was nowhere in the playing XI.

There is no official confirmation, however, if Azmat will go back to his country or not. Currently, Punjab is topping the IPL points table with 13 points from 7 matches. They will face the Rajasthan Royals tomorrow at their home, New Chandigarh.

Omarzai showed promise for PBKS

Azmatullah Omarzai gradually shaped up as a promising all-round option for Punjab Kings, offering flashes of impact with both bat and ball. However, his overall numbers still underline a lack of consistency. Across 16 IPL matches so far, he has scored 99 runs at an average of 12.37, while claiming 12 wickets with an economy rate of 9.68.

Omarzai began his IPL journey with Gujarat Titans in 2024, where he featured in seven matches. He was later picked up by Punjab Kings for ₹2.40 crore and went on to play nine games in the 2025 season, taking eight wickets. His performances were enough for PBKS to retain him for the current season.
