On Friday, the three-time champions Islamabad United made history with a stunning eight-wicket win over the Hyderabad Kingsmen in the 36th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11, held at the National Bank Stadium. Chasing a modest target of 81 runs in this high-stakes game, United cruised to victory, losing just two wickets and finishing with 80 balls to spare.
Debutant Mohsin Riaz led the charge for United, smashing an impressive 42 runs off just 18 balls, featuring six fours and two sixes. Meanwhile, right-handed opener Sameer Minhas contributed a solid 27 runs off 20 balls, remaining not out.
This victory marks Islamabad United's biggest win in PSL history in terms of balls remaining, breaking the previous record of 79 balls set by the 2019 champions, Quetta Gladiators, against Multan Sultans last year.
Earlier in the match, after being asked to bat first, the Kingsmen struggled against United's fierce bowling attack, managing to score only 80 runs before being bowled out in 15.5 overs. Wicketkeeper Usman Khan fought valiantly, scoring an unbeaten 25 off 35 balls, while Saim Ayub, Kusal Perera, and Asif Mehmood each contributed 12 runs, but that was not enough to make a significant impact.
The Kingsmen's total of 80 all out is now the lowest score ever recorded at Karachi's National Bank Stadium, falling short of the previous low of 87 runs set by the Karachi Kings against Peshawar Zalmi earlier this month.
Additionally, it stands as the lowest total in the current eight-team tournament, surpassing the Kings' earlier score of 87 all out against Zalmi. Overall, the Kingsmen's 80 all out ranks as the fifth-lowest total in PSL history, joining the ranks of Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators on this unfortunate list.
