South Africa haven’t won a Test match in India for 15 years, but spinner Keshav Maharaj is confident that the Proteas are ready to end the drought. The Proteas are eager to end their 15-year winless streak in India as they face the hosts in the upcoming two-match Test series, starting November 14 in Kolkata. The second Test will follow in Guwahati.
Maharaj said the team is united by one goal. “There’s a strong determination and drive in the team to beat India in their home conditions. It’s arguably the most challenging tour, if not the toughest. We view it as a major test and an opportunity to check how much we’ve progressed,” he said, as quoted by PTI.
Maharaj pointed out that South Africa have started to make strides in other parts of the sub-continent, with the players viewing this tour as a key chapter in their progression. “We’ve begun to make our mark in other parts of the subcontinent. This is one challenge we’re eager to take on,” he added.
South Africa’s recent visits to India have been tough, with losses in both the 2015 and 2019 series. But Maharaj expects the upcoming series to offer a more even contest.
“I don’t expect the pitches to be as spin-heavy as what we saw in Pakistan. The surfaces in India usually break down slowly, like we saw in the West Indies series. I believe the trend is shifting. Teams are now aiming for wickets that remain competitive for four or five days,” Maharaj mentioned.
Maharaj acknowledges India’s strength at home but remains hopeful.
“We’re building on the momentum from the Pakistan series. No matter the conditions or the toss, we’ve proven we can compete. Our preparation is focused and purposeful. We’re ready to challenge ourselves against the best,” he concluded.
